Gay anime couples
That said, there are some awesome LGBTQ+ anime couples that serve as positive representations of their respective communities. Some of these couples are the main characters in their own gay anime shows, whereas some are featured in series that aren't inherently LGBTQ anime. For years, LGBTQ+ representation in the media has been few and far between, and anime's no exception.
Luckily, it's come a long way since the days of toxic yaoi and yuri romances, and queer fans can find more representation than ever. If you’re an LGBT kid that grew up with anime, you probably found a show or two that had some pretty validating characters when it came to gender and sexuality. There were some anime couples out there that represented us is different ways and had the romances that we really wanted.
Over the years, many anime have produced many LGBTQ+ couples that fans have celebrated and enjoyed. Although some couples come out only at the end of their series, others last the entire series. But here I’d like to take a look at some of my favorite depictions of LGBTQ+ characters in anime. For convenience’s sake, I’ll be including couples along with individuals when possible.
Ryo Asuka. Anime: Devilman: Crybaby. Ryo Asuka isn’t the most likable character by a long shot. Akuma no Riddle: Tokaku and Haru. Tokaku blue hair is novice assassin assigned to kill Haru reddish hair. However, Tokaku instead feels attracted to Haru, and becomes her protector. They have some truly sweet and sexy moments in the show.
It was highly enjoyable to see their interesting personalities interact, with Haru the sweet and gentle one, and Tokaku the one who is quiet but intense. Bloom Into You: Nanami and Yuu. For the next couple, we have Nanami dark hair and Yuu light hair. One of the most interesting things about them is that Nanami is clearly sexually attracted to Yuu, who becomes romantically bonded to Nanami but does not feel comfortable with too much physical contact.
Given: Ritsuka and Mafuyu. Mafuyu is quiet, unsure, and struggles with grief from the past. Gravitation: Eiri and Shuuichi. As with many older yaoi anime, Gravitation presents a couple that is problematic in some ways and full of tropes. All the same, it was the first anime of its genre that I ever watched, so I have a special appreciation for it. Eiri gold hair is a celebrity with an aggressive personality, while novice musician Shuuichi pink hair is cute and carefree as can be.
They have a dramatic and sometimes rocky relationship. Junjou Romantica: Usagi and Misaki. The relationship depicted in Junjou Romantica is full of problems, to be sure. Their dynamic changes through the 3 seasons as they learn to be more sensitive to each other. Usagi eventually realizes that he was wrong in several ways at the start of the relationship, and has a serious discussion with Misaki about it.
All that to say, when it comes to this couple, I am a die-hard fan-girl. Revolutionary Girl Utena: Utena and Anthy. Much to my bafflement, there are still people who will say Utena and Anthy are really just friends.
Shinsekai Yori: Saki and Maria. Saki and Maria make up one of my very favorite anime couples. I love how bonded the two girls are— not only sexually, but also on a deep, emotional and mental level. So I really feel for both characters and their relationship. Thank you so much for reading! Like Loading Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
